Coroner to investigate fatal Eastern Freeway crash

Victorian State Coroner, Judge John Cain and Coroner Darren Bracken attended the site of the collision on the Eastern Freeway last night, to commence a coronial investigation into the fatal incident which killed four Victoria Police members. 

Coroner Bracken will conduct the investigation and has directed Victoria Police to compile a coronial brief of evidence. 
The focus of the coronial investigation will be determined following receipt of the brief. 

Under the Coroners Act 2008, coroners must find, if possible, the identities of the deceased, the cause of their deaths and the circumstances in which the crash occurred. 

Coroners are also empowered under the Act to make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation is ongoing, no further comment can be made at this time.
