Orders and Rulings

A coroner may make an order or ruling regarding an investigation, or during an inquest.

Orders and rulings are not written findings. They can include, but are not limited to:

  • a non-publication order restricting the release or publication of some information
  • a ruling to re-open an investigation
  • a ruling on whether the coroner has jurisdiction to investigate.

On 7 May 2015, Coroner Paresa Spanos made a proceeding suppression order in respect of the death of Isabella-Rose. The order prohibits any publication or broadcast of any identifying material that would identify relatives of Isabella-Rose. COR 2009 5181 James Non-Publication Order Coroner John Olle

Coroner Olle issued a Non Publication Order advising that any published reference to a 24-year-old Essendon man who died from the toxic effects of prescribed morphine and diazepam obtained from prescription shopping be suppressed and that he be referred to only as "James". A full copy of the order can be obtained by contacting the court on 1300 309 519 and asking to speak to the court's Publications and Communications Officer.

On the 15 February 2013, State Coroner Judge Gray made a non publication order in respect of the inquest into the death of Michael Ataklet.
The order prohibits the publication of Exhibit L from the proceedings and part of the evidence given by Mr Mourad Mohammed which touches upon Exhibit L.
The evidence relates to the identification of a person whose identity is suppressed. As such the order cannot be published on the court website.

COR 2014 5251 COR 2014 5251 Non-Publication Order Coroner Audrey Jamieson

On 22 June 2016, Coroner Audrey Jamieson made a Proceeding Suppression Order relating to the investigation into the death of Court Reference Number COR 2014 5251. The order prohibits the publication or broadcast of any material that may identify the deceased, including the name of the father, mother and any other family member. This information is not to be published or broadcast in Victoria or elsewhere in Australia pursuant to s18(2) of the Open Courts Act 2013.
