Orders and Rulings

A coroner may make an order or ruling regarding an investigation, or during an inquest.

Orders and rulings are not written findings. They can include, but are not limited to:

  • a non-publication order restricting the release or publication of some information
  • a ruling to re-open an investigation
  • a ruling on whether the coroner has jurisdiction to investigate.

COR 2009 3369 Co-Sleeping Deaths Non-Publication Order Coroner John Olle

On 3 July 2012, Coroner John Olle made a non publication order in relation to the inquest into Co Sleeping deaths. Coroner Olle made an order suppressing the full names of each of four infants but allowed them to be identified by their first initial. He made a further order that the full names of the infants parents and carers were not to be published. COR 2006 0873 Perera and Perera Non-Publication Order State Coroner Judge Jennifer Coate

On 3 July 2012, State Coroner Judge Coate made a non publication order in relation to the inquest into the deaths of Perera and Perera.

The order prohibits the publication of any material which may identify a witness in the proceeding.
